Escape to Eskdale

Eskdale is one of the prettiest valleys in Lakeland. There is no lake but a delightful mountain river is adequate compensation. The valley is heavily wooded and there are walks to suit all abilities and preferences.

Whilst upper Eskdale is accessible by car we prefer the approach from Ravenglass. Ravenglass can be visited by car, bus or train but we prefer the train journey from Corkickle (the train service does not run on Sundays).

Without doubt the best approach to Eskdale is by the narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale railway with many of the trains being hauled by superbly restored steam engines.

Vistors might enjoy the lovely gardens of Muncaster Castle or the restored mill at Boot and there are plenty of opportunities for refreshments including the new visitor centre at Dalegarth station and excellent local pubs.
