Hard Knott

This is a motoring tour that is well named. It is probably the most difficult road in England with a single track road, 1:3 gradients and hair-pin bends.

For those that can cope with over-heating engines, petrified passengers and the smell of burning brakes the rewards are some of the best views and photo-opportunities possible.

The landscape is stunning and, combined with the amazing history and local attractions, the 2½ hour tour is well worth the visit.

The tour can easily be extended to include visits to excellent attractions such as The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway and Muncaster Castle or excursions to the popular centres of Grasmere, Ambleside and Keswick. A host of walks can include a visit to the Roman Fort at Hard Knott and the lovely Stanley Ghyll waterfall.
