Despite all of this the extraordinary history is readily evident. The Georgian origins are everywhere and some of the architecture is lovely. The original planned grid streetscape is retained and the harbour, once the third busiest in England, has been lovingly restored to provide a bustling fishing port, marina and clever sculptures including the commereration of the only attack on mainland Britain by America’s John Paul Jones during the war of independence.
